Autonomic nervous system is involuntary. It include sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for emergency like increasing the heart rate, increase in blood glucose level, mental alertness, increase in blood supply to skeletal muscles, dilatation of pupils. The functions of parasympathetic system is just the opposite of sympathetic system. Special senses such as vision and hearing pick up the cues from the immediate environment and alerts the autonomic nervous system so that the body is better prepared to tackle any conditions.
