Why is a population the smallest possible unit of evolution, even though natural selection tends to act on individuals, not populations?
population is the basic unit of evolution. population is the group of individual living in a particular area at a particular time.It has a gene pool . it is formed due to natural selection. only those population survive which get acclamitized with changing environment and other remain destroyed or extinct.
when there is any change of genetic material occur in individual due to mutaion,it will passed to next generation due to random mating.it result in improvement of gene pool.
so there is always first change occur in individual /organism first and later on change occur in population.
mutation is the raw material for evolution.
