Please describe the emergent properties of water that contribute to life on earth

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Emergent properties of water are given below:-

1. Adhesiveness/Cohesiveness

Water is polar which means that one end is more electronegative then other end. Hydrogen bond causes the stickiness. It attract the hydrophilic components such as cellulose or starch

2. Maintain relatively constant temperature

It has high specific heat and high heat of vaporization. It means it required high temperature and energy to change temperature and liquid to gas. It helps it to maintain the constant temperature.

3. Good Solvent

As we know that water is polar and hydrophilic in nature. So it gets dissolve in any hydrophilic liquid easily. Second thing is negative charge on one end attract the positive charge carrying molecule.

4. Expands when it get freeze

5. Neutral pH

Water has the neutral pH because it has equal number H+ and OH- ions. It is neither acidic nor basic and having the pH 7.
