Channelopathies are the diseases that are caused by disturbed function of the ion channels.

clinically they cause the fo.lllowing-

  • Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis
  • Hypokalemic periodic paralysis
  • myotonia congenita
  • paramyotonia congenita.

The Q-T interal in the ECG represents the time it will the heart to contract and then refill with blood before next contraction.

Prolonged QT intervals means there is a long refractory period for the heart.

This may be caused due to some electrical abnormality in thr heart.

Dangers to the patient -the patient with prolonged QT interval are at a high risk of-

  • fainting, the most common
  • seizures, which results from hypoxia to the brain
  • Sudden death, which is caused due to the irregular rhyth of the heart. Howeevr the patient can be saved if defribillators are used in time.
