Answer #1

2.A. Guidelines to suppress fever

  • Rest and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Medication isn't needed.
  • Call the doctor if the fever is accompanied by a severe headache, stiff neck, shortness of breat and other unusual signs or symptoms.

B. An antipyretic is a substance that reduces fever. Antipyretics cause the hypothalamus to override a prostaglandin-induced increase in temperature. The body then works to lower the temperature, which results in a reduction in fever. Ex. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or aspirin.
