Glycolysis produces zero molecules of carbon dioxide.This is the first step of cellular respiration and occurs in the cytoplasm to breakdown and oxidize glucose to produce 2 pyruvate, 2 NADH and 2 ATP molecules.

Pyruvate undergoes oxidative decarboxylation in which it loses its carboxyl group (as carbon dioxide) to form acetyl CoA.

In the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl CoA, each pyruvate molecule loses one carbon atom with the release of carbon dioxide.

Two carbons are released as carbon dioxide - out of six originally present in glucose.
