Explain why layers have cellularity, form contiinous sheets and are polarized
Epithelial tissue is also known as epithelia which covers the internal and external surfaces of the body. It forms a boundary between your body and the outside environment. For example skin is an epithelial tissue. The important characteristics of epithelial tissue are polarity, attachment, avascularity, and regeneration.
Polarity means that the epithelium has an apical surface (top side) which faces the open side of the intestines, mouth, lungs, or the outside of the skin. The basal surface (down side) keeps the cells attached to the other tissues. This attachment is the second important characteristic of epithelia.
Cellularity means that the epithelium is made up entirely of cells. In other types of tissue the cells are spread far apart and are separated by lots of extracellular material.
