The ovarian cycle is responsible for preparing the endocrine tissues and release of eggs, it differs from the menstrual cycle which is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the lining of the uterus. Both these cycles are found to occur concurrently and are coordinated in a 22–32 day cycle. The average length is 28 days.
Both of these cycles are divided into three phases:
1. The ovarian cycle consists of the follicular phase, ovulation, and luteal phase.
2. The uterine cycle is divided into menstruation, proliferative phase, and secretory phase.
The follicular phase is responsible for the growth of follicles under the effect of pituitary hormone FSH, the follicle matures and forms Graafian follicle which ovulates under LH effect. The ruptured graafian follicle forms corpus luteum and releases progesterone.
