What happens if exponential growth of a population is not controlled? What would be 3 effective measures to control population sizes and which would be most effective?

Answer #1

If exponential growth of a population is not controlled, it would continue to grow, crossing the carrying capacity of medium, ultimately becoming toxic to other cells. If exponential. Growth of a population is not controlled, the following methods could be used for controlling the population growth:

  • By nutrient limitation, as a result of which the growing cells would not be able to utilise nutrients, leading to a decrease in exponential growth.
  • If there is accumulation of toxic substances, by non removal of the spent medium, it would cause a decrease of the exponential rate of growth.
  • If there is accumulation of excess cells in the medium.

Growth of a population can be represented by simple mathematical models. Write the equation for exponential population growth. Write the logistic equation for population growth. Explain in your own words the meaning of the additional term in the logistic equation. Populations may not grow exactly as predicted by the logistic equation. Discuss one reason for this.
