In cats the locus C for coat color is X-linked. CBCB females or CBY males are black. CYCY females or CYY males are yellow, and CBCY females are tortoise-shell (yellow and black splotches). A population of cats in London consisted of the following phenotypes:

Black Yellow Tortoise-shell

Males 311 42 0

Females 277. 7 54

Apply a procedure and calculate the gene frequencies of the alleles involved. Show your work.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Black males = 311 , and genotype CBY

Black females=277, genotype CBCB

Yellow male = 42, genotype = CYY

Yellow female= 7 genotype = CYCY

Tortoise female = 54, CBCY.

Males have only 1 X , so they will alsways have only 1 allele. Females have 2 x and out of them 1 remains Inactivated in few body cells and in rest the other one giving tortoise coloring like a mosaic.

Total alleles = (males) + 2( no. Of females.)

= 311+42 + 2(277+7+54)

= 1029.

No. Of CB alleles = 311+ 2(277) + 54=919

No. Of Cy alleles = 42+54+2(7) =110

CB frequency = 919/1029 =0.893

CY frequency = 110/1029= 0.106

1. Wool color in sheep is under the control of an autosomal gene which segregates two alleles: B,confers white wool, while the recessive allele b specifies black wool. A population of sheep under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed: Of 325 individuals, 194 have white wool and 131 have black wool. . What is the frequency of the B allele? b. How many of the 194 white sheep are expected to be heterozygous? 2. Cat coat color is controlled by an X-linked...

In cats, the gene for fur color is X-linked and there are 2 alleles, orange and black. The tortoiseshell pattern of black and orange patches is created due to X-inactivation in a heterozygote. A litter of kittens is born with 2 tortoiseshell females and 2 orange males. "The orange locus in cats is located on the X chromosome. In females, XoXo results in orange cats and X+X+ results in black cats When a female is heterozygous XoX+, they express both colors in patches due to a phenomenon called X-inactivation in which one X in every cell is inactivated. These females are called calico or tortoiseshell, depending on the presence of white spots. Male cats are either orange (XoY) or black (X+Y). A cross between a black female...

6. Red-green color blindness occurs in about 8% of males and .4% of females. Many genes contribute to Red-green colorblindness and most of these are sex-linked, which is the reason for the disparity in the frequency between males and females. Call the allele that encodes a functional product "+" and the allele that encodes a non-functional product "=". Why is Red-green color blindness more fequent in males? a.   because males inherit only a single X chromosome, which means that inheriting...
