Ans. Cercus ( cerci in plural) is a pair of appendages at the end of posteriormost segment in insects and arthropods. Functions of cercus are -
- They perform the function as sensory organs.
- Some arthropods and insects use it as pinching structure. They attack their enemies with its cerci.
- Some use it as coupulatory organ and help in reproduction.
- It helps in catching insects and helps in holding.
- In case of male, it is used as structure used for courtship fight to help in possession of female partner.
Despite of its various functions in different insects and arthropods, it is functionless and vestigial in many insects.
