A mutation is a sudden change in the sequence of DNA. If mutations are proofread and corrected then there will be no variation in the population.

If there is no variation then there will be no evolution.

As evolution needs variation to be there.

The major driving force is natural selection- It is the survival of the fittest. The organism who is the fittest survives reproduces and eventually an entire population is formed with that particular characteristics.
