The mRNA codon GCC specfies the amino acid alanine.

Indentify what amino acids would apear in a protein if each of the bases were replaced in a succession by another base?

Ala, Ile, Leu. Val, Gly, Met, Pro, Phe, Trp, Asn, Glu, Arg, His, Lys, Thr

Predict which of the following substitutions would be harmful to the protein in question?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

GCC specfies the amino acid alanine.

If in GCC , each base is replaced in a succession by another base then it code for ACC, that code for threonine, UCC that code for serine, CCC then it code for proline. (Here, Ist base is substituted by another remaining three bases A,G,C.

Similarly replacing second base with remaining three another amino acid then GAC, that code for aspartic acid, GGC that code for glycine, GUC that code for valine.

Similarly, replacing third base with remaining three amino acids, then GCA code for alanine, GCU that code for analnie, GCG code for alanine.

Now, substitutions would be harmful to the protein will be where alanine is substituted by aspartic acid as one is basic another is acidic amino acid. Hence, following substitutions (GCC-> GAC ), would be harmful to the protein in question
