in nitrate reduction test. why is it that some website says that nitrate reduce to nitrite then reduce to either ammonia or nitrogen. but in the charts only nitrate to nitrite to nitrous oxide to nitrogen there is no ammonia?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

All the websites say that nitrate is reduced first to nitrite and then reduced to either ammonia or nitrogen gas.

The important part in a nitrate reduction test is the reduction of nitrate to nitrite and its identification. The metabolites produced after the formation of nitrite could be ammonia, nitric oxide, nitrous oxide or nitrogen.

The reason to exclude ammonia in the chart may be due to its unimportance.

In some aquatic ecosystems, nitrate (NO3–) is converted to nitrite (NO2–), which then decomposes to nitrogen and water. As an example of this second reaction, consider the decomposition of ammonium nitrite: NH4NO2(aq)=N2(g)+2H2O(l) What would be the change in pressure in a sealed 10.0 L vessel due to the formation of N2 gas when the ammonium nitrite in 1.20 L of 1.20 M NH4NO2 decomposes at 25.0°C? atm

A.) Is the national crime rate really going down? Some sociologists say yes! They say that the reason for the decline in crime rates in the 1980s and 1990s is demographics.
