You have observed that genetic variance is equal to 4.0 and phenotype variance is equal to 8.0. Calculate the heritability of this trait. Based on your answer, what can you say about the heritability of this trait? Thank you in advance.

Answer #1

Heritability is a proportion that is derieved by calculating the difference between the genetic variance to the phenotype variance. Heritability ranges between the values 0-1.

A high heritability value that is close to 1 means that the variation in a given trait is due to genotype variation only . And a low heritability value that is close to 0 means that the variation is not due to genotype / genetic.

For estimating the human behaviour, the heritability estimate will be in the range between 0.30 - 0.60.

Here , the genetic variance is equal to 4.0 and phenotype variance is equal to 8.0

Heritability = H2 = Vg / Vp

= 4.0 / 8.0

= 0.50

Here, the heritability estimate is 0.50

This value means that about 50% ot the variation that is observed in this trait is due to the genotype/ genetic variation.

I have a genetics question. Say that two strains of an organism are observed. Pure-Bred strain A produces 90% of wild-type phenotype and 10% mutant phenotype. In Pure-Bred strain produces 70% wild-type and 30% mutant phenotype (both mutant phenotypes are the same) When you cross strain A and B, you get 90% wild-type and 10% mutant phenotype? What could cause this variation in phenotype ratios? Incomplete dominance?

1) You are a breeder of exotic dogs. Assume that you have conducted a standard set of crosses: (P1 x P2  F1  F2) and found that for the F2 population which displays a variance of VP = 1.0, tail length in a dog breed has a narrow sense heritability of 0.4. How much of the variation in phenotype in the F2 population is due to additive genetics factors? 2) If we assume there is no epistasis (VI) or...
