Would the water content inside a potato impact osmosis rate? For example, if a type of potato has 70% water in it, and the other has 30% water in it, would more or less water come in to the potato with 70% water in it when it is placed in a hypotonic solution?

Answer #1

Osmosis is defined as the movement of solvent from the region of higher solvent concentration to the region of lower solvent concentration across a semipermeable membrane. So, the water content of potato influences the rate of moment of solvent molecules. When two potatoes having two different water content of 70% and 30% are placed in hypotonic solution, there will be higher rate of movement in potato having 30% water content over the potato having 70% water content from the surrounding hypotonic solution.
