Discuss, why using antibiotics to treat bacterial infection is much easier than using anti- fungal agents to treat fungal infection?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Wide range of antibiotics are available to treat bacterial infections, but the effective antifungals that are actually used to cure fungal infection are limited. Due to this limited number of antifungal drugs, antifungal resistance will occur quickly. Evolutionarily, fungi are much more closely related to humans than bacteria, as a result it is very hard to find antifungal drugs. Due to this similarities in evolution the antifungal drugs also cause harm to the normal cells of humans. As a result using antibiotics to treat bacterial infection is much easier than using anti- fungal agents to treat fungal infection.

A strategy common to treating bacterial infections and cancer is to provide patients with two different antibiotics (for infections) or two different chemotherapeutic agents (for cancer) using two drugs that act on two distinct targets. This strategy is aimed at reducing complications from bacteria or cancer cells developing resistance to the drugs. What is the general notion behind this strategy? I.e., exactly why could one expect the chance for developing resistance to be much less?
