Hyperventilation will result in ___________; the kidneys will respond by _______H+

Select one:

a. Acidosis;reabsorb

b. Alkalosis; reabsorb

c. Acidosis; excrete

d. Alkalosis;excrete

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Option b- Alkalosis; reabsorb

Hyperventilation is the rapid and Deep breathing. This causes the exhalation of more CO2 and inhalation of more O2. It leads to a decreased partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide and in turn alter the CO2 and bicarbonate concentration. The increase in Bicarbonate concentration can cause alkalosis. The Kidney compensates the alkalosis by reabsorbing more H+ ions from the urine. These H+ ions can bind with bicarbonate ions and this will reduce the pH to normal range.
