Supposed peptone was removed from a Mannitol Salt Agar plate, how would this affect an organism that can't ferment mannitol?
Mannitol salt agar medium is used for detection and isolation of Staphylococcus aureus which is pathogenic in nature.Peptone is used in Mannitol salt agar medium to provide nitrogen, minerals, vitamins or amino acids. This componants are requred for the bacterial growth. Bacteria which can ferment mannitol, generate an acid and as a result the phenol red which is present as an indicator in the medium will changed to produce yellow colour. As peptone is essential for providing growth support. In general, the bacteria which can only able to ferment mannitol grow on mannitol agar plate, in absence of peptone aother bacterias which can not ferment mannitol will not grow, as they will lack the growth requirement factors.
