Name the two cations and the two anions that are mainly responsible for neuronal signal transmission and describe where their action is located within the neuron. please answer this question in one full paragraph in detail

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Two cations and anions that are mainly responsible for neural signal transmission are as follows:

  • Positively charged (cations): Sodium(Na+) and Potassium(K+)
  • Negatively charged (anions): Chlorine(Cl-) and organic anions

In most neurons the positively charged Potassium (K+) cation and negatively charged organic anions are present at a higher concentration inside the cell than outside. These are commonly found in proteins and amino acids. In contrast the positively charged Sodium (Na+) cation and negatively charged Chlorine (Cl-) anion are present at higher concentration outside the cell than inside the cell. This means there are stable concentration gradient across the membrane fo all of the most abundant ion type.
