Which of the following is true about the overall reaction of photosynthesis as it occurs in plant cells: 6CO2 + 12H2O + light energy ? C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O? (Choose all that apply.)

Carbon dioxide is reduced.

The overall reaction (as written above) is exergonic.

Sugar is oxidized.

Carbon dioxide is oxidized.

The overall reaction (as written above) is endergonic.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans- Following two are correct statements-

(i). Carbon dioxide is reduced

In the process of photosynthesis carbon dioxide is reduced to glucose because there is gain of electrons as seen by calculating electrons and water is oxidised to oxygen because it loses electrons.

(ii). The overall reaction is endergonic

Endergonic reaction is the one which uses energy to firm products while exerginic is the one which releases energy. Photosynthesis is endergonic because plants take in solar energy, water, chlorophyll and carbon dioxide to firm glucose.
