Choose the correct statement about the genetic code.

a. includes 61 codons for amino acids and 3 stop codons

b. almost universal; exactly the same in most genetic systems

c. three bases per codon

d. some amino acids are coded by multiple codons

e. all of the above

Answer #1

All of the above

First option is correct because there are total 64 codons out od which three are stop codons and one is start codon which also codes for methionine amino acid.

Second option that because genetic code is almost Universal. There are certain exception like mitochondrial genome and Paramecium.

Third option is correct because a codon is a set of three nucleotides.

Fourth option is correct because one amino acid can be encoded by more than one codons but one codon codes for only one amino acid. The former refers to the degeneracy of genetic code and latter referred to as specificity of genetic code.

The nature of the genetic code also protects us from mutation. Two or three codons may specify an amino acid and these codons only differ at the third base. If the third base in the codon is replaced, can it result in the same amino acid? If the second base in the codon changes to a different base, it will change to a different amino acid. Amino acid changes can be conservative or non-conservative. If it is a conservative missense...
