Why is it important to understand the evolutionary origins of prokaryotic pathogens?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Prokaryotic organisms and eukaryotic organisms share a common ancestry. The origin of life began from a common ancestor according to Darwin's theory of evolution.

The prokaryotic organisms lack a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Eukaryotic organisms, on the other hand, have membrane-bound organelles like mitochondria and chloroplasts. The origin of these organelles is attributed to the endosymbiotic theory, wherein certain bacteria were engulfed by archaeal cells to form the existing eukaryotes.

Also, the genetic composition is conserved across organisms and so are the functions of proteins and many central pathways.

Therefore, gaining knowledge on the evolutionary orgins of prokaryotes is crucial in unrevealing the mysteries of our origins and functions of several proteins in our health and disease.
