Genetics question:

GRS1 is a transcription factor that is expressed throughout the tomato plant. Peppers have two genes that are homologous to GRS1: one is expressed in the leaves and one is expressed in the roots. What evolutionary model explains this pattern?

A) Neofunctionalization

B) Subfunctionalization

C) Dosage

Homework Answers

Answer #1

B is the right answer.

Explanation: Neo functionalisation model of evolution states that a gene evolved is found to carry a new function.

Dosage model tells that the gene expression is maintained in two sexes. This is done by reducing the expression of one gene by heterochromatised that gene.

Sub functionisation model states that the duplicated gene bears the same function as found in ancestral gene. The GRS 1 gene is expressed in two places because the gene is insertee at two different promoter. One is inserted at leaves promoter and another one is inserted at root promoter.

In Drosophila, loss-of-function Ultrabithorax mutations result in the posterior thoracic segments differentiating into body parts with an identity normally found in the anterior thoracic segments. When the Ultrabithorax gene was cloned, it was shown to encode a transcription factor and to be expressed only in the posterior region of the thorax. Thus, Ultrabithorax acts to specify the identity of the posterior thoracic segments. Similar genes were soon discovered in other animals, including mice and men. You have found that mice...

QUESTION 2 The textbook considers the extension of the Ricardian model to more than two goods – let’s consider the case of more than two countries. Consider a world of FIVE countries: two countries (A, B, C, D and E), that produce clothing and food with one factor of production, labor. Suppose the opportunity cost of clothing with respect to food (aLC/ALF) in each country is the following: A: 1    B: 2   C: 3   D:4   E:5 Suppose the international...

1A )Choose the false statement: A) Genes that are carried by current species will have no impact on the evolutionary pace or direction of future life; hence, regardless of what kinds of changes in biodiversity are brought on by climate change, the potential for new life forms remains infinite. Probability and Genetics Lab In heredity, we are concerned with the occurrence, every time an egg is fertilized, of the probability that a particular gene or chromosome will be passed on through the egg, or through the sperm, to the offspring. As you know, genes and chromosomes are present in pairs in each individual, and segregate as they go into the gametes (egg and sperm). There are two possible genes (alleles) that the egg or sperm might obtain from each...

1. Nutrition’s role in the later years. As people age, the choices they have made throughout their lives—in the areas of diet, exercise, and lifestyle—all have an impact on who they are and what their nutritional and energy needs are. In addition, stress and genetics also impact these needs. Use your knowledge of nutrition and older adults to answer the following questions to the best of your ability. Regular _ is the most powerful predictor of a person’s mobility in...
