Based on TV ads for health clubs, diets and the need to exercise more to lose weight, it appears that society has a negative view of fat (lipids). Do you feel this position is justified – why or why not. Is there a positive aspect of lipids?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Total negative view of lipid not justified as lipids are one of the most important macromolecules of our body. There are two types of lipids, one is saturated and other is unsaturated. Saturated fatty acid is the one with no double bonds and that is not healthy for human body. Unsaturated fatty acid is the one with one or more double bonds. Lipids are needed for making the cell membrane. Composition of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids change as the temperature changes and that is necessary to have combination of both type of fatty acids. So, any thing excessive is bad for health and same goes for lipids but the TV ads showing totally negative impact of lipids is not justified and they should also show positive impacts of fatty acids as well.
