RNA dependent RNA polymerase is mainly involved in the retroviral reproduction. Where the genetic material of viruses is RNA.

There , a error prone RNA dependent RNA polymerase will lead to replication of genetic material packed in new viruses (in the host) , will be highly error prone. This , would result in different protein molecules formeda expressed.

Thus, this can completely change the characteristics of the virus. And it is well said, the change slowly slowly can be that large which can lead to new species formed.
