Uptake of naked, foreign DNA from the surrounding environment occur during which type of bacterial recombination?

Select one:

a. epistasis

b. transformation

c. conjugation

d. transduction

e. binary fission

Homework Answers

Answer #1

d. Transduction.

This method of bacterial recombination includes the uptake of foreign DNA material by a bacterial cell introduced by a bacteriophage. The phage lyses bacterial wall and introduces its DNA. The phage enzyme degrades the bacterial DNA and makes use of the bacterial machinery to make new virulent phages that uptake pieces or fragments of bacterial gene in their genome. When this virus re-infects a new bacterial cell it transfers it's DNA containing the bacterial DNA fragment into the recipient cell. At this point recombination occurs and the recipient bacteria has a foreign recombined fragment in its genome.
