True or false:

Muscular distrophy in golden retrievers is a sex-influenced disorder because a homozygous recessive male will show the phenotype but a homozygous recessive female will not.

Answer #1

ANSWER: FALSE , it is rather an X linked disorder and not a sex influenced disorder.

EXPLANATION: Golden retrievers muscular dystrophy is an X linked recessive disorder in which male dogs are more commonly affected. Dystrophin gene is present on X chromosome. Since male has only one X chromosome, for a male to be affected, he has to receive only one X chromosome with defect from either of the parent. Whereas for a female dog to be affected, she has to receive defective X chromosome from both the parents which will be quite rare. Hence it is more common in a male dog than female.

In golden retrievers, the D/d gene codes for an enzyme that produces a pigment. The dominant allele (D) results in a golden pigment, while the recessive allele (d) codes for red pigment. Additionally, the V/v gene produces a transport protein responsible for depositing the pigment produced by D/d into the hair. When the dominant V allele is present, the color expressed by D/d will be deposited and the dog will be that color (golden or red). However, allele v is...

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is recessive sex (or X)-linked disorder, which causes muscle degeneration and premature death. A couple is pregnant with a boy and neither has DMD. The father’s family has no history of DMD, but the mother is unsure of her genetic family history as she was adopted. The mother decides to take advantage of some of the new genomic screening tests and learns information about a large number of her genes. She finds that she is a...
