A true breeding agouti (brownish color) mouse is crossed to a true breeding albino mouse. The F1 generation is all agouti. When members of the F1 are interbred the following types of mice are obtained in the F2 generation:

agouti              180

albino              80

black               60

How many genes control color in these mice? How many alleles for each gene? Explain your answer (in one sentence).

What are the genotypes corresponding to each of the three phenotypes? Explain. Be sure to clearly indicate the alleles that are dominant and the alleles that are recessive.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

2 genes control the coat colour

there are 2 alleles for each gene

it is an example of recessisve epistasis

when we take out the ratio of agouti :albino: black=180:80:60=9:4:3

in this allele A is hypostatic to allele c

genotype

agouti=AACC,AaCC,AACcAaCc(when both A and C are dominant)

albino=aacc,AAcc,Aacc(cc gives albino mice regardless of A gene alleles)

black=aaCC,aaCc(when C is dominant and A is recessisve)

A is dominant over a and C is dominant over c

cc is epistatic it hides the expression of A regardless of being dominant or recessive allele

A strain of heavy mice was crossed with a lighter strain; the F1s were all of intermediate weight. When these F1 mice were interbred, a continuous distribution of adult weights was obtained in the F2 generation. Only about one F2 mouse in 1000 was as heavy as the heavy parent stock. Assuming that the observed inheritance pattern is quantitative, how many genes contribute to this phenotype?

You are doing a genetics experiment with fruit flies. In your first cross, you cross two true-breeding flies (P generation). The female parent is brown and wingless and the male parent is black with normal wings. All of the flies in the F1 generation are brown and have normal wings. In the following questions, please indicate the alleles associated with dominant phenotypes by uppercase letters and alleles associated with recessive phenotypes by lowercase letters. Fill-ins. Type the one BEST word or short phrase into the answer box. In rats, the pigment gene has two alleles: the P allele is dominant and confers no pigment in the hair (no color); the p allele is recessive and confers hair pigment (color). A second gene, black, also has two alleles: the B allele is dominant and confers black hair pigment and the b allele is recessive and confers tan hair pigment. The dominant P allele is epistatic...

(6 pts) In a unique species of bird, feathers may be white, blue, red, or pink. All colors may be true breeding. Color is determined by two unlinked autosomal genes. If true-breeding birds with blue feathers are crossed to true-breeding red-feathered birds, all F1 birds have white feathers. F1 birds were allowed to intercross to generate the F2 generation. Amongst the F2, the following ratio was observed: 9/16 white: 3/16 blue: 3/16 red: 1/16 pink In still another cross, using...
