I have a theoretical question about enzymes - do any enzymes exist that could bind a synthetic compound that does not occur in nature/biologically? Or all substrates biological, just as all enzymes are biological?
Question
Yes, the enzyme could bind to the synthetic compound. When we design drug in pharmaceutical industries, we wish to design an inhibitor (which is mainly synthetic) that could bind to the enzyme active site more easily as compared to its natural substrate by the competitive inhibition (mechanism of enzyme inhibition). For example, aspirin drug that we use to reduce pain and fever is actually a synthetic derivative of salicyclic acid which is a natural substance.
