  • As we know the process of DNA replication is not always perfect as there are some errors or mutations build up over time which can lead to normal cells becoming cancerous.
  • Exposure to UV rays to sun and too much consumption of alcohol escalates the risk of developing mutations.
  • Telomeres protect or seal the ends of chromosomes and with each cell division there is shortening of telomeres which may lead to tissue dysfunction and oxidative stress increasing the risk of neoplastic growth.
  • Increased DNA hypermethylation and suppression of tumor suppressor genes such as p53, Rb etc. may lead to cancer with increasing age.
