Ans: Lichen are the are pioneer species in primary succession.  Lichen is a perfect example of mutualism between algae and fungi. The fungus provides support and algae provides nourishment through photosynthesis. This contributes to the fitness of pioneer species and everything that follows. Lichen colonizes bare rock and then breaks it down by secreting acid which further starts the soil-production process. As lichen die, organic matter in the form of decomposed remains contributes to the soil. Mosses then colonize the thin soil. Moss life cycle starts through haploid spore that germinates to produce tree.
