Loss of VHL in renal cancer prevents the hydroxylation of HIFa and thusly stabilizes HIFa resulting in the induction of angiogenesis and the expression of glycolytic genes.

True or False

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans) This statement is true.

Von hippel lindau disease is caused when mutation occurs in VHL genes which are a tumour suppressing gene. And when mutation, loss or inactivation of this gene occurs it causes cancer and increased angiogenesis. And in case of renal cancer the HIFa is not hydroxylised making it stable; this causes subsequent rise in angiogenesis and also expression of glycotic genes starts.

Marshal and Angela have skin cancer resulting from xeroderma pigmentosum (XP). They meet at an event for teenagers with cancer. However, their mutations affect different genes. They decide to marry but not to have children because they believe that each child would have 25% chance of inheriting XP because it is autosomal recessive. Are they correct? Why or why not?

Pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) is expressed in most cancer cells. It has a reduced catalytic activity relative to PKM1, which is expressed in quiescent cells. The significance of PKM2 expression in cancer cells is that PKM2 enhances the conversion of pyruvate to lactate and the regeneration of NAD+ needed for glycolysis to continue. True or False

cancer cells live long because they retain all the enzymes & metabolic pathways of normal cells (is this true or false) names of benign tumors end in oma & liposarcoma is benign, but lipo carcinoma is malignant ( t or f) normal cells have contact inhibition which prevents growth. (t or f) lack of sticking to each other (cohesiveness) enables cancer cells to penetrate normal barriers (body/walls/membranes) and seed themselves at many locations beyond the barriers

A common tool in laboratory medicine and biology is the microarray, a device that can measure the expression levels of thousands of genes at once. So, for example, an investigator might collect samples from normal subjects and subjects with cancer in the hopes of finding genes that are significantly associated with cancer. The investigator is therefore testing a null hypothesis for every gene on the array. Suppose that a given array has 2,000 genes, of which 20 are truly associated...
