This mechanism maintain the population for a species as progeny result of such mechanism are non viable (not surviving) and if survive then non-fertile and also and they can not reproduce or proliferate further. Such kind of mechanisms are evidently present in plant as well as in animal species. Most common example of such kind of mechanism is Mules (hybrid offspring of male donkey and female horse). Therefore, both mechanisms are important for a particular species for the balance in the population.
