1) What is the function of pepsin? Where is it found in the human body?
2) Did the addition of pepsin have any effect on salivary amylase’s ability to digest starch? What do you think pepsin does to salivary amylase? Do you think this normally happens in the human body?
Pepsin is an enzyme that acts on the proteins and breaks them into Aminoacids.
Pepsin is secreted by the stomach epithelial cells and is found in the stomach.
Salivary amylase acts on carbohydrates and digests them into simpler sugars. Salivary amylase is made up of proteins and so it can be digested by pepsin. So the ability to digest carbohydrates will decrease.
No this doesn't happen in the human body as Pepsin has to be activated by the HCl from the stomach by which time salivary amylase does it's function in the mouth and stomach.
Hope this helps... Thank you!!!
