The major difference between meiosis and mitosis in both process and product are as follows -
01. Mitosis leads to generation of two daughter cells while meiosis leads to generation of four daughter cells.
02. In mitosis, daughter cells have equal number of chromosomes and are identical with respect to mother cell while in meiosis, daughter cells have half the number of chromosomes and half of daughter cells are parental-type while rest half are non-parental type (due to crossing over and independent assortment) with respect to mother cell.
03. Mitosis involves one-cycle with four-sub phases namely prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase while meiosis involves two-cycles with sub-phases namely prophase I, metaphase I, anpahase I and telophase I and prophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II and telophase II respectively.
