We are starting to talk about metabolism - the process by which biomolecules are interconverted between different forms and energy is harvested and recruited to fuel cellular processes. This week we discuss four key interrelated topics - redox chemistry, the glycolytic pathway, fermentation and the TCA cycle.

For the drawing this week, create a picture that includes representations for each of these four processes:

1. redox chemistry

2. Glycolysis

3. Fermentation

4. TCA/citric acid cycle

You should show the connections between these topics. The molecular pathways do not need to show all details but should have the main inputs and outputs (products) clearly labeled.

This is mostly, however, about trying to practice seeing and representing the connections between these topics. It's all one big connected lesson!!

As usual, turn this in by uploading a pdf, png, jpeg, or jpg image of your work - one page only please.

Answer #1

Glycolysis occurs in cytoplasm. Under anaerobic conditions (fermentation) pyruvic acid forms LACTIC ACID in the cytoplasm. Under aerobic conditions PYRUVATE enters Mitochondria where Acetyl-CoA starts the TCA (Krebs) cycle. Here NADH (produces3ATP) ,FADH2 ( produce 2ATP) produced undergo oxidative phosphorylation (REDOX reactions) to generate ATP's.
