When replication is complete, how do the 2 new DNA molecules compare to each other and the original DNA molecule?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

DNA is double-stranded, nucleotides in one strand of the DNA is complementary to the nucleotides in the other strand.

DNA replication is semiconservative, that is one strand in the parent double-stranded DNA molecule is used as the template for the synthesis of new DNA molecule, and DNA polymerase adds nucleotides complementary to the template strand.so the newly synthesized DNA molecules will have the same sequence as that of the parent double-stranded DNA.

2 new DNA molecules and the original DNA molecule has the same nucleotide sequence in both strands. The 2 new DNA molecules have one strand from the parental DNA and one newly synthesized strand, the parent strand and newly synthesized strand in the new DNA molecules are different in both new DNA molecules.

This question is about the Mode of DNA replication: Meselson-Stahl experiment 4. The investigators "anticipated that a label which imparts to the DNA molecule an increased density" (Introduction, paragraph 1) might help reveal how atoms in parental DNA are distributed to progeny DNA molecules. During DNA replication, after adding each nucleotide to a new strand of DNA, DNA polymerase checks that the nucleotide it just added is the correct one, i.e. that it is complementary to the opposite nucleotide on the template strand. This activity is called the ____________ activity of DNA polymerase. If this activity detects that a wrong nucleotide has been added, then the _____________ activity of DNA polymerase is activated, allowing the wrong nucleotide to be removed.
