Base excision repair is a DNA repair mechanism that initiated by DNA glycosylases, which recognize and remove specific damaged bases and forming apurine or apyrimidine site (AP site). This AP site then cleaved by an AP endonulease. The single strand break may be two types - - 1.a single nucleotide is break and replaced (short patch BER), 2. 2-10 nucleotides removed and new nucleotides are synthesized (long patch BER).
Base excision repair mechanism requires proteins like - - DNA glycosylases, AP endonulease, DNA polymerase and ligase 1 instead of ligase 3.
**Base excision repair is - - : It uses phosphodiesterase activity of DNA polymerase b.
: Very similar to Nucleotide Excision Repair but it uses DNA glycosylases..
