In a court action a man claims that some of the four children supposedly belonging to him and his wife are NOT his children.  Blood test of the husband and wife and the four children gave the following information:

  • husband “AB”
  • wife “A”
  • child 1 – “AB”
  • child 2 – “A”
  • child 3 – “B”
  • child 4 – “O”

Assuming that all were in fact born to the wife, could all these children belong to the husband?  Explain

No, all children are not belonging to the husband. Because the husband had AB genotype. His genotype is iAiB

The wife phenotype is A. It produces O child also. This suggests that the genotype of woman is iAiO.

Parents: man(iAiB) × Wife ( iAiO)

Punnet square:

Gametes iA iO
iA iAiA( A blood group) iAiO ( A blood group)
iB iAiB ( AB blood group) iBiO ( B blood group)

The O blood group can't be produced by man and wife. That's why child 4 is not the child of man.
