Point mutation is the single nucleotide change in the genetic sequence either by insertion or deletion of one nucleotide. Point mutation in the genetic code affects the protein produced by altering its structure and function as alteration in a single nucleotide may lead to change in amino acid sequence of the peptide which may have some deleterious effects. The site of mutation in the genome also decides what sort of change it will cause after mutation. For instance, if it occurs in non coding region then mutation will have no effect mostly. If the mutation occurs in the promoter, then genetic expression will change that will lead to change in protein.
