ITS region or Internal Transcribed Spacer region is a
non-functional spacer DNA that is situated between two genes (
situated between structural ribosomal RNA (rRNA) on a precursor
transcript.)
Uses of ITS region
- Known as the Universal Fungal Barcode because ITS region is the
widely sequenced region in fungi for identifying molecular
ecology.
- Used to identify the geographical races of species and also
used to identify the molecular systematics of the species in its
genus levels.
- Used to resolve the species and isolates species in the same
genus.
- ITS region variability differs from taxa to taxa.
- ITS region is same in same genus and is used as a similarity
cutoff for identifying the same genus species.
