Which of the following membranes is expected to have higher Tm value?

  1. one containing lipids with Octadecanoic acid

  2. one containing lipids with 9-Octadecenoic acid

  3. one containing lipids with Octadecanoic acid and cholesterol

  4. one containing lipids with 9-Octadecenoic acid and cholesterol

  5. the Tm values of all above membranes are very similar

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Higher Tm value: One containing lipids with octadecanoic acid and cholesterol

Tm or melting temperature of lipid membranes increase as the membrane loses fluidity and becomes stiffer. Stiffness is imparted by presence of cholesterol and of saturated fatty acids. Octadecanoic acid is a saturated fatty acid containing 18 carbons whereas 9 octadecanoic acid is a 18 carbon long fatty acid with one double bond. Double bond introduces fluidity into the membrane.

Thus fatty acid with no double bond (octadecanoic acid) and cholesterol will make the membrane stiff.

Consider a buffered solution containing CH3NH3Cl and CH3NH2. Which of the following statements are true concerning this solution? (Ka for CH3NH3+ = 2.2 × 10-11). (Select all that apply.) If [CH3NH2] > [CH3NH3+], then pH is larger than the pKa value. If NaOH were added to the initial buffered solution, then the [CH3NH2] would increase. If [CH3NH2] = [CH3NH3+], then pH = 3.36 If [CH3NH2] < [CH3NH3+], then pH is larger than the pKa value. A solution consisting of 2.5...

Which of the following statements is CORRECT? Group of answer choices The risk that cashflows will have to be reinvested in the future at lower rates, pushes investors to require higher rates from shorter term bonds, compared to similar longer term bonds. The longer the time to maturity, the greater the change in the value of a bond in response to a given change in interest rates. All of the above are correct. None of the above is correct.
