1.) A woman who has blood type A positive has a daughter who is type O positive and a son who is type B negative. Rh positive is a trait that shows simple dominance over Rh negative and is designated by the alleles R and r, respectively. Which of the following is a possible genotype for the father?

2.) A woman who has blood type A positive has a daughter who is type O positive and a son who is type B negative. Rh positive is a trait that shows simple dominance over Rh negative and is designated by the alleles R and r, respectively. A third gene for the MN blood group has codominant alleles M and N.

If both children are of blood type M, list all of the possible parental phenotypes

Answer #1

A) A woman who has blood type A positive has a daughter who is type O positive and a son who is type B negative. Rh positive is a trait that shows simple dominance over Rh negative and is designated by the alleles R and r, respectively.

Which of the following is a possible genotype for the father?

  • When mother is A positive:
    • This means she can be IAIA or IAIo  and Rh+Rh- or Rh+Rh+
  • When daughter is O positive:
    • she is IoIo and Rh+Rh- or Rh+Rh+
    • this means genotype of mother is definitely IAIo,  as half of Io would be recieved from mother and half would be from father.
    • So father would be _Io
    • As daughter is Rh+ so mother could be Rh+Rh- or Rh+Rh+
  • When son is B negative:
    • Son will be IBIB or IBIo  and Rh-Rh-
    • As from daughters blood group analysis it was clear that father have one Io and son is B type blood, while mother is A+ so IB is definitely coming from father genotype which should be IBIo
    • As son is Rh- it means each of Rh- gene is coming from each parents.
    • Father is Rh+Rh- and mother is Rh+Rh-

GENOTYPE OF FATHER IS:   IBIo Rh+Rh-

GENOTYPE OF MOTHER IS:   IAIo Rh+Rh-

B) A woman who has blood type A positive has a daughter who is type O positive and a son who is type B negative. Rh positive is a trait that shows simple dominance over Rh negative and is designated by the alleles R and r, respectively. A third gene for the MN blood group has codominant alleles M and N.

If both children are of blood type M, list all of the possible parental phenotypes

Possible mother genotype Possible father genotype
IAIo Rh+Rh- IMIo IBIo Rh+Rh- IMIo
IAIo Rh+Rh- IMIM IBIo Rh+Rh- IMIM
IAIo Rh+Rh- IMIo IBIo Rh+Rh- IMIM
IAIo Rh+Rh- IMIM IBIo Rh+Rh- IMIo
IAIo Rh+Rh- IMIN IBIo Rh+Rh- IMIo
IAIo Rh+Rh- IMIN IBIo Rh+Rh- IMIM
IAIo Rh+Rh- IMIM IBIo Rh+Rh-IMIN
IAIo Rh+Rh- IMIo IBIo Rh+Rh-IMIN
