Which lipid form is transported across the outer mitochondrial membrane before β-oxidation?

a) Acylcarnitine

b) Fatty acyl CoA

c) Acetoacetyl CoA

d) Lysophospholipid CoA

I know that acylcarnitine is transported across the inner mitochondrial membrane before beta oxidation but is this the same as the outer mitochondrial membrane?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Option A , acyl carnitine

Fatty acids can not cross the mitochondrial membrane directly so they are transported as acyl carinite.

Teo enzyme are involved in this process

CAT1 ( carnitine acyl transferase 1 present outside of outer mitochondrial membrane

CAT 2 present in side of mitochondrial membrane.

So actual group is added by CAT 1 is , replaced by CAT 2 in side of mitochondria

Acyl group added in fatty acid present in side of mitochondrial is different from outer side acyl group.

In cell two separate acyl group are present one out side of mitochondria and other inside of mitochondria.
