How many moles of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate could bind to each mole of hemoglobin and myoglobin, respectively?

Select one: a. 2 and 1 b. 4 and 1 c. 4 and 0 d. 1 and 0

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Option D is correct answer.

BPG(2-3 bisphosphoglycerate) is present in RBC in high concentration. BPG is a highly charged anion that bind to Beta chain of Hemoglobin and reduce the affinity of oxygen to the hemoglobin. Generally one(1) mole of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate bind to one molecular of hemoglobin (more specifically deoxyhemoglobin).

Myglobin is a monomer present in muscle, have strong affinity to oxygen ,but BPG does not bind to myglobin.

So. Answer is 1 and 0 (option D)
