While conducting research you notice that when a barrier is added to not allow cell-cell interactions, genetic exchange no longer occurs in your bacteria. What can you conclude about the method of genetic exchange that was occurring?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Out the three ways in which genetic exchange can occur in bacteria, conjugation is the only method that requires cell-cell interaction, the other two methods being transduction and transformation.

In conjugation, a direct contact between cells is required for the formation of the conjugatiin tube. Exchnage of genetic material occurs via this conjugation tube. If a barrier prevents cell-cell interactions, conjugation will not take place. Thus, in the above experiment, the method of genetic exchange was conjugation.

You are a directed studies student (undergraduate student conducting research in a lab for course credit) and your supervisor asks you to use a cryopreserved cell culture stock to determine where an enzyme is located in the cell and to measure its activity.   The cryopreserved yeast or E. coli cells have been genetically modified to express a synthetic enzyme. During the synthesis of this enzyme it is thought that the enzyme could be incorporated into different membranes within the cell....

Your laboratory has just gained the license to allow you to research, and commercialize the results for, a novel Protein 18(p18). Because there is very little known about this protein, you need to characterize the protein. You are provided with: the human cDNA corresponding to the protein, a Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell line expressing the cDNA for the p18, and the amino acid sequence (using the one-letter code) of the p18. Shown following is the first 30 amino acid...

Experiment 3: The Importance of Cell Cycle Control Some environmental factors can cause genetic mutations that result in a lack of proper cell cycle control (mitosis). When this happens, the possibility for uncontrolled cell growth occurs. In some instances, uncontrolled growth can lead to tumors, which are often associated with cancer, or other biological diseases. In this experiment, you will review some of the karyotypic differences that can be observed when comparing normal, controlled cell growth and abnormal, uncontrolled cell...

You are opening your own wedding planning business and are conducting some market research. According to The Knot Real Weddings Study, the average cost of a wedding in the U.S. is $35,000. You are skeptical about whether these numbers apply to the Piedmont Triad area—your target market—and so you decide to conduct your own survey. After randomly sampling 40 recently married couples, you find an average cost of $32,000 with a standard deviation of $10,000. When you conduct your survey,...

Several states are considering legislation that would limit the use of cell phones while driving an automobile. A researcher at the University of Utah investigated whether cell phone use impairs drivers’ reaction times. Sixty-four randomly selected students were divided evenly into a treatment group and a control group. Participants were instructed to press a break button on a driving simulator when a red light flashed. The control, or ” no phone”, group listened to the radio while they performed the...

The line drawn to mark where and/or when you have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" can get quite fuzzy, particularly in this age of evolving technology.
