Fermentation is a way for microbes to

     a. generate ATP by substrate level phosphorylation in glycolysis.

     b. generate ATP by substrate level phosphorylation in fermentation.

   c. produce waste products they can use as energy sources.

     d. oxidize NADH for recycling in glycolysis.

     e. oxidize NAD+ for recycling in glycolysis.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Option D

FErmentation is the process of breakdown of glucose in the deficiency of oxygen. The end product depends upon the type of cell undertaking fermentation.

If it is lactic acid fermentation, then it leads to the formation of lactic acid and the enzyme involved is lactate dehydrogenase.

If it is alcohol fermentation, then the enzyme involved is alcohol dehydrogenase.

Lactic acid fermentation takes place in some microorganisms and in human muscles whenever there is a deficiency in the supply of oxygen.

Alcohol fermentation takes place in bacteria and yeast.

Fermentation is energetically very less efficient process because its generate only two molecules of ATP.

The main purpose of fermentation is to oxidise NADH into NAD+ so that it can enter aerobic respiration.
