  1. If the field size under a 100x magnification is 0.1 mm in diameter, what would it be under a 40x magnification? Show the calculation.

  1. How about a field size of 0.12 mm under a 10x magnification, what would the field size in mm be under a 400x magnification? Show the calculation.

Answer #1

1. Field size = Eyepiece field number /M(ob)

M(ob) -Objective lens magnification.

Thus ,Field size (low magnification) X Magnification (low) = Field size (high magnification) X Magnification (high)

Field size (low magnification in mm) X 40 =  0.1mm X 100

  Field size (low magnification in mm) = 0.1 X100 / 40 = 0.25

2.Field size (low magnification) X Magnification (low) = Field size (high magnification) X Magnification (high)

0.12 X 10 = Field size (high magnification) X 400

Field size (high magnification) = 0.12 X10 /400 = 0.003

A circular storm water sewer 1.5 m in diameter and effective roughness size 0.6 mm is laid to a slope of 1:500. Determine the maximum discharge which the sewer will convey under uniform open channel conditions. If a steady inflow from surface runoff exceeds the maximum open channel capacity by 20%, show that the sewer will become pressurised (surcharged) and calculate the hydraulic gradient necessary to convey the new flow.

Air under standard conditions (ñ=1.23 kg/m3, µ=1.79 x 10 -5) flows through a 4- mm diameter drawn tubing with an average velocity of V = 50 m/s. For such conditions the flow would normally be turbulent. However if precautions are taken to eliminate disturbances to the flow (the entrance to the flow is very smooth, the air is dust free, the tube does not vibrate etc.), it may be possible to maintain laminar flow. What is the pressure drop in...
