Why do some ribosomes bind associate with the endoplasmic reticulum to form the rough ER, while other ribosomes remain free in the cytoplasm during translation? What types of proteins are synthesized by each group of ribosomes?
The ribosomes bound to the ER synthesise proteins that should be transported to some distant parts of the tissues or the proteins that needs to be embedded in the membrane of the cell. The free ribosomes synthesise proteins that have their function in the cytoplasm of the cell such as cytoplasmic enzymes or cytoplasmic proteins. Hence both proteins synthesised have their own function inside the cell.
